Lit MKE Candles

Lit MKE Candles Logo

Hello and thank you for exploring LIT MKE,

I started my small business in 2015 when I was a bartender/server and out of my primary frustration of seeing so many bottles and cans being thrown into the garbage. I knew there was something I could do to reduce the impact all of these bottles and cans had on the environment. I decided to act.

I noticed that so many of these containers were works of art. So I wanted to think of something that kept the beauty of the bottle, but would provide some purpose that people would want. I decided that I would try my hand at making candles. I was able to develop a method to make the transformation from trash to treasure. I am constantly developing my craft and researching new ways to reduce the environmental impact of the candles.

To stay true to my mission of contributing to an environmentally conscious lifestyle, LIT MKE candles uses a premium blend of soy and coconut waxes with 100% cotton wicks. I am always looking to improve the qualities of the candles and experiment with  Each candle is carefully crafted by hand, locally in Milwaukee by myself and with help from my apprentice Karl. As the business continues to grow, I am excited to provide more opportunities for the community.

The community has also been very supportive of the mission. Please take a look at my regular supporters page and consider giving those businesses your patronage.

Thank you all for your support, business, and efforts in improving our planet for years to come.

Cheers~

Mike Bate

Mission BBQ

Mission BBQ Logo

MISSION BBQ opened its doors for business on September 11, 2011.

Ten years after our world changed forever, in some small way we wanted to change it back.

As the founders of MISSION BBQ, we strive every day to remind everyone what makes Our Country great—its heroes.

Who are we? Two friends passionate about BBQ, patriotic for Our Country, and who believe in running a business with meaning and purpose.

We believe there is nothing more American than BBQ. And nobody more American than the brave men and women who have sworn to protect and serve Our Communities and Our Country. We do what we do for the love of our soldiers, firefighters, police officers, first responders—all our loved ones in service.

We set across this great land from Texas to Kansas City, the Carolinas to St. Louis…to discover the secrets of great BBQ.

Every day we strive to serve you authentic BBQ made from the freshest, most delectable ingredients, and serve it to you in a patriotic dining room filled with tributes to those who’ve made Our Country great, given to us by the people who earned them. Stop by at lunchtime, and you might catch us during our daily salute to the Stars and Stripes.

We don’t do any of this because we have to. It’s because we want to.

At MISSION BBQ, we are Proudly Serving Those Who Serve. Come help us complete Our Mission.

Terrapin Beer Company

Terrapin Beer Company Logo

Terrapin Beer Co. began as a daydream between founders John Cochran and Spike Buckowski, who met while working for a microbrewery in Atlanta.

The two recognized that they had something to contribute to the brewing industry in the southeast, and began crafting recipes. In April of 2002, Rye Pale Ale made its first appearance in Athens, GA. Only a short six months later, Rye made it to Denver for GABF, where John and Spike took home a Gold Medal for the beer in the American Pale Ale Category.

In 2007, Terrapin Beer Co. moved into its current location on Newton Bridge Road in Athens, and set out to share its unique beers with its hometown and the rest of the Southeast. Inspired by the creative culture of Athens, Terrapin began to add to its beer line up, with unique beers like W-n-B, Hopsecutioner, and so many others. Today, Rye Pale Ale is accompanied by six other year-round beers, four seasonal sessions, and at least a dozen special projects, side projects, and collaborations.

The company and its employees continue to live by Terrapin’s mission statement: to create unique experiences through the passionate brewing of the finest quality craft beers. Whether you’re joining us for a brewery tour at our tasting room, drinking a Hopsecutioner at your favorite watering hole, sipping some Up-Hi on your back porch, or enjoying a RecreationAle after a long day on the trail, we hope you appreciate the dedication we’ve put in for 14 years (and counting!)

What started as two guys and a 25 barrel brewhouse has grown into what is affectionately known as the Terrapin Tribe, that starts with our employees, our distributor partners, the folks that sell our beer, and of course, each and every person that has supported Terrapin’s growth as a brewery by drinking our beers!

Follow the Signs

Logo+with+white

Objects with a past life fascinate me.  Thrifted and vintage furniture fills my home and I most often wear clothes once worn by another.  I like the idea of giving old items a purpose and an opportunity to exist in a new way.  For instance, my collection of vintage maps from the 1940-1970s, amassed during my college years, sat unused in the basement. I wanted to find a new use for these discarded treasures beyond the walls of a box.

Because maps are beautiful pieces of art in their own right, I enjoy treating them that way, as the foundation of my oil paintings of mid-century roadside neon signs.

Roadside signs, once commonplace, are magical when spotted today.  Their lights, the brilliant colors, and bold shapes stand out as unique and thrilling in a landscape of the unremarkable. Unfortunately, these sculptures are disappearing, often due to the great expense of operation and repair.  In one way, my paintings serve as a way to preserve these signs from the past.

My signs, however, do not celebrate the darker pieces of the time from which they harken.  The design of the original signs–motel and liquor stores, diners and drive-in theatres– attracted customers during a time when not all customers were welcome.  I want to reinvent the purpose of these signs to attract and welcome everyone.

I like to imagine driving down the road and seeing bright shiny signs filled with encouragement and kindness. Can you imagine the world filled with signs beckoning with “YOU ARE WELCOME HERE” and “YES” instead of “KEEP OUT” or “RESTRICTED”?  What would that world look like?
